Markham Closes Patriot Season with 8-3 Loss

Date: Feb 07, 2010

Toronto, ON: The 2009-2010 season drew to a close tonight as the Patriots were visited by the Markham Waxers at the MasterCard Centre, suffering their final loss of the season with an 8-3 loss to Markham. Goal scorers for the Patriots were Joey Gagliese, Billy Lovatsis and Michael Sicilia.

The Waxers started the game by scoring a quick goal inside the three minute mark of play, a goal from Zach LaRue inside the blue line. Not staying down for too long, Joey Gagliese fired one of his own past Franky Palazzese after prior shots from Nick Perruccio and Jordan Spear failed to penetrate.  Both teams played well in the first, the Patriots holding it out of its end, putting offensive pressure on the Waxers' defence.

Markham got an early start with two goals, the first from Doug Reid, low behind goaltender Jay Pelletier of the Patriots, followed by Markham's third goal scored by David Titanic. Both Reid and Titanic are Markham's point leaders.  Bringing down the lead to only one was Billy Lovatsis, scoring a fast goal behind Palazzese off a pass from Michael Sicilia; but, with just over two minutes left in the second period, Reid scored his second (and Markham's fourth) goal of the game to lead into the third period with a 4-2 lead for the Waxers.

The Patriots came out stronger in the third, both wearing off Markham's offensive attacks while putting up a few challenges of their own. Strong playing by Matthew Galati and Erlich Doerksen led to solid results both on the offensive end and defensive; forward Michael Sicilia continued to be effective on all areas of the ice. Unfortunately, Markham found two breaks and used them to score two more goals on Pelletier, the first from Taylor Murphy on powerplay and then Reid getting his hat trick at the mid-way point in the third period. Johnny Szasz scored one of his own 12:35 into the third period, followed by a goal from Massimo Lamacchia as the final buzzer ticked closer. Just before the buzzer, Patriots' Michael Sicilia's hard work throughout the game paid off and he scored one of his own assisted by Joey Gagliese.

A special thank you to all Upper Canada Patriots fans and supporters for the 2009-2010 season.
